About

In the Azul Cup, national teams compete against other nations in a series of Azul games hosted on Board Game Arena to determine the World Champions.

Each national team comprises of at least 3 players.

The tournament runs twice a year in January and July.

Format

Games are played in a 1v1, colour side, turn-based format, with a 5 day duration per player.

There are two rounds in the Azul Cup, a first round Regional Tournament, followed by a 2nd round Finals Tournament. The format for both are the same.

For each round, teams are required to put forward 3 competing players, however teams can be made up of more players.

Round one: Regionals

Teams are organised into 4 groups, known as regions. Each region will have a separate tournament created for each competing player, therefore they'll be 3 tournaments per region. Players from each team are then placed into tournament 1, 2 or 3 based highest to lowest ELO rated player.

Teams will be split across groups: A, B, C, and D. Each group has 3 tournaments for each of the nations players, and each tournament has 6 players.

Tournaments are round robin and the team that has the highest total wins after all 3 tournaments are played is declared the Group winner and advances to the finals. In case of ties, this is broken by head-to-records of the tied teams and finally the score differences from the games played.

Depending upon participation a number of wild cards may also qualify based upon their win record and then tie breakers, as above.

Round two: Finals

The finals comprise of winning national sides from each group and any wild cards and are played in the same format as the regionals.

Players are re-ranked for the finals before organising into the tournaments.

Winners and runners up

Each season, the winning nation along with their team members, will be recorded on this webpage for all to see. :)

Games are to be played by individuals:

All games must be played solely by the individuals that are participating in them without collaboration from other team members. This includes seeking advice or feedback for moves.

Player rotation:

After regionals are completed, teams that are fortunate enough to have many members, are welcome to rotate their team. This enables all team members to have an opportunity to compete. The number of players competing still need to meet the tournament requirement of 3.

Timing players out:

Players will be provided with sufficient time in which to complete a game. If however a player is out of time then it is allowed for the player to be timed out, it is recommended that BGA guidelines are followed.
